Did you know Napier was once the sweet potato growing capital of South Africa?
To celebrate this humble yet versatile vegetable, we have named our annual
festival, which incorporates the Napier Half-marathon, a mountain bike race and a trail run, in honour of it.
Notice to all
The sweet potato and the races (whether on your mountain bike or your two feet) are central to the festival long-weekend, this year from Friday, 16 June to Sunday, 18 June.
But waiting around for family and friends to finish their athletic endeavours makes you hungry. And this year there is a veritable feast of food stalls.
Frankly, itís a wonderful unofficial gathering of the nations on the Agulhas School of Skills field, where the races begin and end.
The 2017 Napier Patatfees Organising Committee and The Agulhas School of Skills are proud to announce that, from the 2018 Napier Patatfees, when this rural town will celebrate the 25th birthday of the event, a bursary will be launched to support learners at The Agulhas School.
The Napier Patatfees organisers plan to forge closer ties with the Agulhas School of Skills, which, for many years, has been the centre of the main events of the festival.
"Any organisation, no matter how large or small, has a responsibility to the community in which it operates," says Dirk Uys, chairman of the present organising committee. "Helping a learner or learners financially to acquire the skills that will lead to employment and even job creation is, arguably, the best investment the festival can undertake.
"This bursary relies, however, on the strong and ongoing support from our sponsors, donors, advertisers, visitors and local residents; this is not something the committee or the festival can do alone," adds Uys.
Mr R Johannes, principal of The Agulhas School of Skills, says that "this type of selfless support from the Patatfees promises to open many doors" for the learners.
"I would like to thank this year's Napier Patatfees Committee for their intention to support the school in providing learnerships," says Johannes. "The plan to financially support two learners to enable them to attend an 11-week course in Hermanus in the future under the auspices of Learn to Earn, may enable these learners to fulfil their dreams to become independent adults and make a positive contribution to the economies of their community."
While the many finer details of the bursary have yet to be finalised and will be addressed after this year's event, the announcement of such a bridge-building opportunity involving learners could not be more fitting than on Youth Day.
"We remember the historical context of Youth Day and the unspeakable challenges facing the scholars in Soweto in 1976. How can one not make a commitment to today's children, especially those with learning challenges, against that background?" says Beverley Pender, a member of this year's Patatfees Organising Committee tasked with media liaison.
"But we will need much support -- from big business and committed individuals alike -- to make this bursary happen and to sustain it into the future," adds Pender.
