Did you know Napier was once the sweet potato growing capital of South Africa?

To celebrate this humble yet versatile vegetable, we have named our annual festival, which incorporates the Napier Half-marathon, a mountain bike race and a trail run, in honour of it.

Notice to all

Some visitors to Napier think that the Patatfees is an annual celebration of the patat or sweet potato. Others, that itís a fine excuse for fanatically fit or enthusiastically game folk to get going at the crack of dawn and tackle the hills and dales of the Overberg.

Itís both and more.

The sweet potato and the races (whether on your mountain bike or your two feet) are central to the festival long-weekend, this year from Friday, 16 June to Sunday, 18 June. But waiting around for family and friends to finish their athletic endeavours makes you hungry. And this year there is a veritable feast of food stalls. Frankly, itís a wonderful unofficial gathering of the nations on the Agulhas School of Skills field, where the races begin and end.

Cape Malay and Cuban, Indian and Italian, Mexican and Boetieís best boerewors are some of the cuisine styles on offer.

Yes, there are burgers, too, and snoek and chips. And thereíll be even more to taste by the time the booking of the stalls reaches its deadline.

Naperians love to keep it local Ė yes, worldwide trends do reach those who live in the country too. Locals are very proud of the goat cheeses produced by Jeanette at Domino Farm just outside the town; Sanity Farmís organic and free-ranging farm methods result in the finest pork sausages this side of Sir Lowryís Pass. (Donít forget to stock up before you head back to the city: itís guaranteed youíll be missing both the fresh air and the fresh produce.) Their respective stalls will be on the Agulhas School field, too.

There are many more stalls, of a different kind. But thatís for later ...

We will be celebrating our
24th Napier Patatfees
during the weekend of
Friday 16 June to
Sunday 18 June 2017.

The scarecrows along our streets will welcome visitors for this fun filled weekend, fine cuisine will be enjoyed in the numerous restaurants, outstanding wines of the Overberg estates will be available and there will be fun events for the youth.
